School Songs
One of Steve's favorite jobs is writing songs with children. When he goes to schools as an Artist in Residence, Steve teaches children of all ages how to write songs — and in the process writes one with them. Here are some of the songs Steve and the kids have written in the past few years. You can listen to or download the songs for free!

| Me and My Very Best Friend - MAR 2012 | Peter S Ogden Elementary, 3rd and 4th graders: Vancouver, WA | Me and My Very Best Friend - MAR 2012
In second grade I tripped and fell
I dropped my food I embarrassed myself I was laying there on the ground Dirty upset and down Then all of a sudden from out of the blue A familiar helping hand came through They picked me up and I knew Who helps me Who makes me happy I’ll tell you who my very best friend Who do I call when I need someone to talk to I’ll tell you who my very best friend Who knows all my secrets my hopes and my dreams Who am I there for when they are in need We’ll be together until the end me and my very best friend I got a phone call just the other day My best friend said I’m moving to another state I started crying I couldn’t stop Didn’t want to lose the best friend I’ve got One last sleep over and then we’d say goodbye Exchanging our numbers when just in time The parents changed their minds Who helps me Who makes me happy I’ll tell you who my very best friend Who do I call when I need someone to talk to I’ll tell you who my very best friend Who knows all my secrets my hopes and my dreams Who am I there for when they are in need We’ll be together until the end me and my very best friend |

| Nobody Quite Like You - MAR 2012 | Chinook Elementary, 3rd Graders: Vancouver WA | Nobody Quite Like You - MAR 2012
Everybody wants to fit in
Do what it takes to be the popular kid But I have to say at my school Just being who you are is perfectly cool We have our differences but we're all friends When somebody's down we remind them You're one of a kind you're an original Just being yourself you're something special You can shine like the stars there's no telling how far you will go It's true. No one can do what you do There's nobody quite like you Everybody can sparkle Be really brilliant and remarkable We're all talented in different ways If you're not good at something it's okay Don't try to be a copycat where's that at Always remember that You're one of a kind you're an original Just being yourself you're something special You can shine like the stars there's no telling how far you will go It's true. No one can do what you do There's nobody quite like you Don't try to change yourself for someone else Be who you want to be Stay on the road you're on singing your own song, pretty soon the World will see You're one of a kind you're an original Just being yourself you're something special You can shine like the stars there's no telling how far you will go It's true. No one can do what you do There's nobody quite like you |

| My Anger Belongs to Me - DEC 2011 | Students at PS 14: Staten Island, NY | My Anger Belongs to Me - DEC 2011
My anger belongs to me
I’m in control of everything I do My anger is like a fence That holds me back from hurting me and you When I feel frustrated When I get aggravated I breathe in, I breathe out And I try to think about it I take ownership of my emotions I put my thinking into motion And I’m okay My anger belongs to me I’m in control of everything I do My anger is like a fence That holds me back from hurting me and you When someone lies to me It drives me crazy When someone talks about my mother Or my father It’s hard to keep my rage in check So I count to ten I find comfort in The fact that I won’t cross that line That ends badly every time My anger belongs to me I’m in control of everything I do My anger is like a fence That holds me back from hurting me and you |

Seven forty-five on the school bus
Hey, look over there There’s a kid who’s cussin’ And pullin' the new kid’s hair I wanna stand up I wanna say something But I’m trembling with fear I’m just hoping he doesn’t come over here And then I heard a little voice Say, “you have a choice” You can sit and watch it happen Or you can choose to take some action Stand up for someone who can’t stand up for themselves All of a sudden a bunch of us got up And walked right up to that kid Five voices strong told him it was wrong Stop doin’ this, and he did You can sit and watch it happen Or you can choose to take some action Stand up for someone who can’t stand up for themselves It’s a never ending battle But we must fight for what is right Let’s replace the hate and cruelty With kindness, love and light If we can find the path to peace I believe that it will be never ending The very next day in the cafeteria She was sitting all alone I walked over and sat next to her I gave her an ice cream cone She remembered me She smiled at me You can sit and watch it happen Or you can choose to take some action Stand up for someone who can’t stand up for themselves It’s a never ending battle But we must fight for what is right Let’s replace the hate and cruelty With kindness, love and light If we can find the path to peace I believe that it will be never ending Never ending |

| Never Give Up - APR 2011 | East Lake Elementary, Mrs. Chisam's 7th and 8th graders: Clearlake Oaks, CA | Never Give Up - APR 2011
In my last basketball game we were getting’
stomped. It was half-time. We were down by 23. My team looked pale, and weak, and broken. The coach came in the locker room and these words were spoken: Never give up, never give up, never give up, _________ Never give up, never give up, never give up, _________ When all the stars in the sky are refusing to shine, And you’re at the end of your rope, Never give up, never give up, never give up, HOPE. Halfway across the world there was an earthquake, And the tsunami that came was even worse. I saw the survivors on TV And it made me feel lucky that it wasn’t me, But I wanted to help, so I sent some money and a note that said: Never give up, never give up, never give up, _________ Never give up, never give up, never give up, _________ When all the stars in the sky are refusing to shine, And you’re at the end of your rope, Never give up, never give up, never give up, HOPE. Someone in my family is pretty sick. When I visit them, I don’t know what to say. They look pale, and weak, and broken And I’m thinking to myself and hoping that they’ll see another day And I say: Never give up, never give up, never give up, _________ Never give up, never give up, never give up, _________ When all the stars in the sky are refusing to shine, And you’re at the end of your rope, Never give up, never give up, never give up, HOPE. |
