School Songs
One of Steve's favorite jobs is writing songs with children. When he goes to schools as an Artist in Residence, Steve teaches children of all ages how to write songs — and in the process writes one with them. Here are some of the songs Steve and the kids have written in the past few years. You can listen to or download the songs for free!

| Stop Sign - MAY 2013 | Woodfern Elementary, 3rd grade: Hillsborough, NJ | Stop Sign - MAY 2013
If you’re about to say something mean to somebody
Think twice, make a stop sign When you’re madder than mad and just want to explode Don’t pick a fight, make a red light Imagine how you would feel if somebody did it to you Pause for a minute, take some time to really think it through If you’re about to say something mean to somebody Think twice, make a stop sign A couple of days ago playing basketball with my friends I missed a shot Someone yelled you’re lame, why do you play this game I felt like a volcano about to erupt When one of my friends said don’t stoop to their level Just go home and punch a pillow Eat some rocky road ice cream with those little marshmallows If you’re about to say something mean to somebody Think twice, make a stop sign When you’re madder than mad and just want to explode Don’t pick a fight, make a red light Imagine how you would feel if somebody did it to you Pause for a minute, take some time to really think it through If you’re about to say something mean to somebody Think twice, make a stop sign One day my sister said can I borrow your laptop for 20 minutes or so Three hours later I asked can I have it back And she had the nerve to say no I was agitated aggravated angry and annoyed I wanted to smack her and smash all her toys But I said to myself there’s a better choice If you’re about to say something mean to somebody Think twice, make a stop sign When you’re madder than mad and just want to explode Don’t pick a fight, make a red light Imagine how you would feel if somebody did it to you Pause for a minute, take some time to really think it through If you’re about to say something mean to somebody Think twice, make a stop sign |

One day I was walking on the grass field
On the playground at my school Enjoying the breeze on a nice sunny day When I saw something that wasn’t cool Someone pushed my friend off the swing They were lying there crying in pain I said are you ok And they said this happens to me everyday And sometimes I just wanna say Why me Did I do something wrong Why am I always the one getting picked on Is it my size, is it my shape Is it my religion or is it my race The clothes on my back, the shoes on my feet The color of my skin or the way that I speak Why why why why me So what if I’m different, so what if I’m strange I am who I am and I’m not gonna change Do what you will, point out my flaws I won’t live by your labels, your rules or your laws I won’t give you the power to ruin my day Now and forever you can’t make me say Why me Did I do something wrong Why am I always the one getting picked on Is it my size, is it my shape Is it my religion or is it my race The clothes on my back, the shoes on my feet The color of my skin or the way that I speak Why why why why me I hope that maybe someday No one will have to say Why me Did I do something wrong Why am I always the one getting picked on Is it my size, is it my shape Is it my religion or is it my race The clothes on my back, the shoes on my feet The color of my skin or the way that I speak Why why why why me Why why why why me |

| It's Your Move - APR 2013 | M J Shannon Elementary: Surrey, BC | It's Your Move - APR 2013
At my school three students decided to start a club
To hate on someone for no reason at all To hurt them, to make them feel small Then one day they asked me to join, I said no They said if I didn’t I’d be next Started talkin’ trash, makin’ threats They swore if I told anyone My life would be anything but fun So I said to myself It’s your move Put your best foot forward Do what you’ve gotta do It’s your time Don’t be afraid to do what’s right Stand up for what you believe in What happens here is up to you It’s your move, it’s your move I went home, I was feeling depressed and full of fear Should I tell my parents or maybe not Should I call my best friend or call the cops That night I was having trouble getting to sleep Said I don’t deserve all this stress This is a complicated mess And I said to myself It’s your move Put your best foot forward Do what you’ve gotta do It’s your time Don’t be afraid to do what’s right Stand up for what you believe in What happens here is up to you It’s your move, it’s your move Next day when I got to school I told the principal about those those fools I hope if this happens to you that’s exactly what you’ll do It’s your move Put your best foot forward Do what you’ve gotta do It’s your time Don’t be afraid to do what’s right Stand up for what you believe in What happens here is up to you It’s your move, it’s your move It’s your move, it’s your move |

If you see something say something
Stand up for yourself, stand up for somebody else Your silence won’t make a difference It’s all up to you, you know what to do If you see something say something At my old school there was a girl Who wasn’t who she appeared to be She used to say I’ll be your friend until the end But she seemed a little two-faced to me One day I caught her stealing stuff from someone else’s desk A pencil, an eraser and a book I should have turned her in but I was too afraid So I just let her off the hook Turned out that wasn’t all she took If you see something say something Stand up for yourself, stand up for somebody else Your silence won’t make a difference It’s all up to you, you know what to do If you see something say something There’s this new boy in my class Who wears a turban on his head I saw three punks making fun of his culture I can’t repeat the words they said I walked up to him and said it’s gonna be all right Let me brighten up your day I already told the teacher and the principal How disrespectful they were talking to you that way If you see something say something Stand up for yourself, stand up for somebody else Your silence won’t make a difference It’s all up to you, you know what to do If you see something say something If you see something say something If you see something say something |

You’re really nice You’re super smart You always show your enormous heart Like when my best friend moved away And you said, “Do you want to play?” You put a smile on my face that day Fill a bucket every chance you get Put someone else first, give a compliment Show people kindness it’s easy to do Help someone out and you’ll feel good too Fill a bucket Fill, fill, fill, fill a bucket ONe time I lost my favorite teddy bear It was like it had vanished into thin air I found the bear under a thousand other toys Things that could be loved by other girls and boys So my mom and I went down to the public park in tow We donated those toys; made some smiles out of frowns Fill a bucket every chance you get Put someone else first, give a compliment Show people kindness it’s easy to do Help someone out and you’ll feel good too Fill a bucket Fill, fill, fill, fill a bucket Be polite, pleasant, considerate, cheerful Always show your heart of gold Fill a bucket every chance you get Put someone else first, give a compliment Show people kindness it’s easy to do Help someone out and you’ll feel good too Fill a bucket Fill, fill, fill, fill a bucket |

| We Are the Panthers - NOV 2012 | Western Primary School, 4th and 5th graders: Russiaville, IN | We Are the Panthers - NOV 2012
Every morning when I walk into my classroom
All my friends say, "Hi how ya doin’?" "Did you do all your homework last night?" And then the day begins We get out our assignment notebooks Sharpen our pencils as the principal walks in He says, "Good morning, everybody!" "Are you ready to learn today?" And we say, "Of course!" We are the Panthers, the Western Panthers These paws don’t bully, these paws are kind Our school is so cool We walk the hallways with pride We are the Panthers We have recess, we get to go outside Sometimes we race each other to the slide And when we play games, we always play fair We show each other how much we care We are the Panthers, the Western Panthers These paws don’t bully, these paws are kind Our school is so cool We walk the hallways with pride We are the Panthers What we believe we can achieve If we work hard we will succeed Nothing is impossible here! We are the Panthers, the Western Panthers These paws don’t bully, these paws are kind Our school is so cool We walk the hallways with pride We are the Panthers (we encourage others) We are the Panthers (we support each other) We are the Panthers (we have the best teachers) |

| I'm Gonna Be a Leader - NOV 2012 | Mary Raber Elementary School, 4th and 5th graders: Columbia City, Indiana | I'm Gonna Be a Leader - NOV 2012
One day I was walking down the hallway of my school
I saw two kids fighting, breaking all the rules While everybody else stood watching I was like a lifeguard at a pool Yeah I dove into action, said, "Stop it right now, that’s not cool." I’m gonna be a leader I’m gonna show the world what I can do Gonna be a leader How ‘bout you? Last week I was watching the news and I heard about the hurricane All that water, all that damage from all that wind and rain I was sitting there wishing I could help all those people in pain If I was older, I’d tell you what I’d do, I’d hop on a plane I’m gonna be a leader I’m gonna show the world what I can do Gonna be a leader How ‘bout you? I’m a self starter, a problem solver I take pride in my work and I’m responsible I’m a good listener, I’m open to all ideas I try to do the right thing I’m ready, willing and able I’m gonna be a leader I’m gonna show the world what I can do Gonna be a leader How ‘bout you? |
